This transmission serves as a direct replacement for the following North American models:
Toyota 4Runner 4WD (Base): 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999 (cable kickdown)
Toyota Tacoma 4WD (2.7L): 1995–1999 (cable kickdown)
Compatibility Note: This is specifically for the 2.7L 4-cylinder engine. It will not bolt up to the 3.4L V6 (5VZ-FE) due to bellhousing and input shaft differences. Please verify if your original transmission uses a throttle cable (kickdown) or is fully electronic (ECT-i).
To ensure 100% OBDII compliance and factory-spec shifting, professional technicians recommend these steps:
Solenoid & Harness Swap: You must transfer your original USDM internal wire harness and solenoids to the JDM unit. JDM plugs are frequently different, and using your USDM electronics ensures the ECU receives the correct resistance values, preventing "Check Engine" lights or limp mode.
Speed Sensor (VSS): Reuse your original USDM Speed Sensor from your old transmission. This ensures your speedometer and cruise control remain 100% accurate.
Transfer Case Configuration: This unit typically includes the JDM transfer case. Ensure the shifter linkage and flange size match your USDM driveshaft. In most cases, it is easiest to bolt your original USDM transfer case onto the JDM transmission housing.
Fluid Service: Flush the transmission cooler lines thoroughly. Fill only with Toyota ATF Dexron II/III compatible fluid (or as specified on your dipstick). Pro Tip: Replace your radiator at the same time to prevent the "Pink Milkshake" failure from ruining your new JDM transmission.
