This engine is a direct long-block replacement for the following North American models:

• Subaru Outback (non-Turbo): 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005

• Subaru Legacy (non-turbo): 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005

• Chassis Cross-Compatibility: Also serves as a high-quality donor for 2000–2005 Subaru Forester, Impreza, and Baja (SOHC Models).

• Compatibility Note: This is a Non-AVCS (Active Valve Control System) engine. It is not compatible with the 3.0L H6 models or the 2006+ EJ253 i-Active Valve Lift models without heavy modification.

JDM to USDM Installation & Swap Guide

To ensure 100% compatibility and a "first-turn" start in your USDM Outback, professional Subaru technicians recommend the following "External Swap" steps:

1. Intake Manifold: You must transfer your original USDM Intake Manifold. JDM versions have different vacuum line routing and EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) configurations that will trigger a Check Engine Light (CEL) in North American chassis.

2. Engine Sensors: Swap your original USDM PCV Valve, Camshaft and Crankshaft Sensors to the JDM block.

3. Wiring Harness: Always retain and use your original USDM Engine Wiring Harness. JDM harnesses are built for right-hand drive and will not interface with your Outback's bulkheads.

4. Exhaust Manifolds: Swap your original USDM Exhaust Manifolds. JDM versions may lack specific oxygen sensor bungs required for California or Federal emissions compliance.

5. Oil Pan: Inspect the JDM oil pan; if your Outback has a specific skid plate or different exhaust header clearance, you may need to swap your original pan and pickup tube.
