JDM EJ20X to USDM EJ255 Swap Guide

To successfully install the EJ20X into a North American Forester XT, professional Subaru technicians recommend the following "Integration" steps:

  1. Turbo & Exhaust: The EJ20X features a Twin-Scroll Turbocharger and Header system. To utilize this, you must use the JDM downpipe. If you prefer to keep your USDM exhaust, you must swap your original USDM Single-Scroll Header, Up-pipe, and Turbo onto the JDM block.

  2. Dual AVCS vs. Single AVCS: The EJ20X has cam sensors on the exhaust side. The USDM Forester ECU only supports Intake AVCS. Most installers leave the exhaust AVCS solenoids unplugged (which defaults to safe timing).

  3. Wiring Harness: Always retain and use your original USDM Engine Wiring Harness. You will need to swap over your original USDM sensors (Crank, Cam, Knock) to ensure the harness plugs are 100% compatible.

  4. Intake, Exhaust Manifold: We recommend transferring your original USDM Intake & Exhaust Manifold to ensure all vacuum lines, Tumble Generator Valves (TGV), and fuel lines match your factory harness and chassis.

  5. Oil Pan & Pickup: Inspect the JDM oil pan for clearance. If the JDM pan differs from your original SG Forester pan, swap to your USDM Oil Pan and Pickup Tube to ensure perfect subframe clearance.
