JDM to USDM Installation & Swap Guide

To ensure 100% compatibility and a seamless "Plug-and-Play" installation into your USDM 4Runner, professional installers recommend the following "External Swap" steps:

  1. Intake & Exhaust Manifolds: You must transfer your original USDM Intake Manifold and Exhaust Manifolds. JDM versions (often from the Hilux Surf) may have different vacuum port locations or lack the specific EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) ports required for North American emissions.

  2. Oil Pan & Pickup: If your 4Runner is 4WD, you must swap your original USDM Oil Pan and Pickup Tube. The JDM pan will likely not clear the 4Runner's front differential or steering stabilizer.

  3. Distributor & Ignition: Transfer your original USDM Distributor, Spark Plug Wires, and Knock Sensor. This ensures your original wiring harness and ECU communicate perfectly with the engine.

  4. Wiring Harness: Always retain and use your original USDM Engine Wiring Harness. JDM harnesses are configured for right-hand drive and will not interface with your chassis or fuse box.

  5. Water Housing: Swap your original USDM Water Outlet and Thermostat Housing to ensure all heater and radiator hoses align perfectly.
