Vehicle Fitment

This engine is a direct long-block replacement for the following North American models:

• Subaru Impreza 2.5RS / 2.5TS: 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005

• Subaru Impreza Outback Sport: 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005 (2.5L Models)

• Chassis Cross-Compatibility: Also serves as a high-quality donor for 2000–2005 Subaru Forester and 2000–2005 Outback/Legacy (SOHC Models).

• Compatibility Note: This is a non-AVCS engine. It is not compatible with the 2006+ EJ253 i-Active Valve Lift models without heavy modification.

JDM to USDM Installation & Swap Guide

To ensure 100% compatibility and a "first-turn" start in your USDM Impreza, professional Subaru technicians recommend the following "External Swap" steps:

1. Crankshaft & Camshaft Sprockets: You must transfer your original USDM Driver’s Side Camshaft Sprocket and Crankshaft Sprocket. The "trigger" teeth on JDM sprockets differ from North American versions; failing to swap them will result in a "No Start" condition as the ECU won't recognize the timing signals.

2. Intake Manifold: You must transfer your original USDM Intake Manifold. JDM versions often have different vacuum routing and EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) configurations that will trigger a Check Engine Light (CEL).

3. Engine Sensors: Swap your original USDM PCV Valve, Camshaft and Crankshaft Sensors to the JDM block.

4. Wiring Harness: Always retain and use your original USDM Engine Wiring Harness. JDM harnesses are built for right-hand drive and will not interface with your chassis bulkheads.

5. Exhaust Manifolds: Swap your original USDM Exhaust Manifolds. JDM versions may lack specific oxygen sensor bungs required for North American emissions compliance.

6. Oil Pan: Inspect the JDM oil pan; if your Impreza has specific ground clearance requirements or a different exhaust header shape, you may need to swap your original pan and pickup tube.
