Vehicle Fitment

This JDM engine is a direct fit/swap candidate for the following USDM Toyota 2.7L (3RZ-FE) vehicles using a distributor ignition system:

  • 1995–1996 Toyota Tacoma (2.7L 4WD & Prerunner models)

  • 1996 Toyota 4Runner (2.7L 4-Cylinder models)

  • 1995–1996 Toyota T100 (2.7L 4-Cylinder models)

Important Note: This engine is distributor-type. If your vehicle is a 1997 or newer model utilizing Coil-on-Plug or Waste-Spark (Coil Pack) ignition, swap modifications or sensor/intake swaps will be required.

USDM to JDM Swap Guide (1995–1996 3RZ-FE)

Installing a Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) 3RZ-FE into a United States Domestic Market (USDM) Toyota is largely a long-block replacement. Japanese engines do not include USDM emissions components (EGR systems), so transfering key bolt-on items from your original USDM engine ensures a seamless, plug-and-play installation without triggering a Check Engine Light (CEL).

1. Transfer the USDM Intake & Exhaust Manifolds: Emissions & Sensor Compatibility.

JDM engines generally lack Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) ports. Unbolt the intake and exhaust manifolds from your original USDM engine and install them onto the JDM long block.

How to verify: Confirm that all EGR tube connections and vacuum lines match your original USDM routing.

2. Swap Engine Wiring Harness & Sensors: Plug-and-Play Matching.

JDM engines are imported cut or meant for Right-Hand Drive (RHD) vehicles, making the JDM wiring harness incompatible with USDM vehicle dash plugs. Remove the JDM harness and install your original USDM wiring harness onto the engine.

Swap the following USDM sensors/components onto the JDM engine:

  • Distributor assembly & spark plug wires (ensure timing marks align)

  • Coolant temperature sensors (water neck)

  • Oil pressure sending unit

  • Alternator and starter motor

How to verify: Connect all wiring harness plugs; every sensor on the USDM harness should find a matching original sensor port.

3. Swap Oil Pan & Pickup Tube (If Required): Drivetrain Clearance.

Inspect the oil pan sump location (front-sump vs. rear-sump) on the JDM engine relative to your vehicle's front axle or crossmember.

If the sump position differs from your stock engine:

  1. Unbolt the JDM oil pan and dipstick assembly.

  2. Remove the JDM oil pickup strainer.

  3. Clean the block mating surface completely.

  4. Install your original USDM oil pickup strainer with a new gasket.

  5. Install your original USDM oil pan using appropriate RTV silicone sealant.

How to verify: Torque oil pan bolts to factory specifications and inspect visually for gaps along the sealing surface.

4. Install Flywheel / Flexplate: Transmission Mating.

Remove the JDM driveplate or flywheel. Inspect the rear main seal for oil leaks (replace if necessary). Install your original USDM flywheel (manual transmission) or flexplate (automatic transmission) using threadlocker on the bolts.

How to verify: Torque flywheel/flexplate bolts to factory torque specs in a star pattern and ensure smooth crankshaft rotation by hand.

5. Fluid Fill, Mechanical Timing & Initial Startup: Pre-Start Checks.
  1. Bolt the engine to the transmission and motor mounts.

  2. Refill motor oil, oil filter, and fresh ethylene-glycol coolant.

  3. Set ignition timing using a timing light to factory spec (typically 3°–7° BTDC at idle with TE1 and E1 terminals jumped).

How to verify: Start the engine, check for leaks, verify smooth idle performance, and confirm no Check Engine Light (CEL) appears on the dashboard.
