JDM to USDM Swap Guide

Installing a JDM VG33E engine into a North American (USDM) 1999-2004 Nissan Xterra is a reliable upgrade, but minor differences between the Japanese domestic market and US market configurations require specific swap procedures:

Step 1: Pre-Installation Maintenance

  • Replace the timing belt, water pump, front main seal, and rear main seal while the engine is out of the vehicle. It is much easier to service these components on an engine stand.

  • Inspect the oil pan; some JDM truck or SUV variants use different oil pan configurations or dipstick locations depending on the donor vehicle (e.g., Terrano vs. Pathfinder/Xterra). Swap your original USDM Xterra oil pan and pickup tube if necessary to ensure proper clearance and dipstick alignment.

Step 2: The "Long Block" Principle

  • Transfer USDM Accessories: Keep your original USDM intake manifold, exhaust manifolds/headers, alternator, power steering pump, and A/C compressor.

  • Distributor Warning: JDM and USDM distributors can occasionally feature different plug wiring or internal optical/electronic triggers depending on the exact year. Always swap your original USDM distributor onto the JDM engine to maintain correct communication with your USDM ECU and avoid ignition timing codes.

Step 3: Sensors and Wiring Harness

  • Transfer your original USDM coolant temperature sensors, oil pressure sending unit, knock sensor, and oxygen sensor wiring brackets over to the JDM block. Using your original sensors guarantees seamless plug-and-play integration with your factory Xterra harness.

Step 4: Flywheel / Flexplate

  • If your Xterra is a manual transmission, install your USDM flywheel and clutch kit. If it is an automatic, bolt up your original USDM flexplate. Ensure the torque converter or pilot bushing is properly aligned during mating.

Step 5: Initial Startup & Fluids

  • Fill the cooling system slowly, ensuring all air pockets are bled out of the cooling lines to prevent overheating.

  • Prime the oil system by cranking the engine with the fuel pump fuse pulled (or ignition disabled) until oil pressure builds, then start the engine and monitor for leaks.

All Star JDM offers limited warranty coverage on eligible used engines and transmissions. Used replacement engines and transmissions are generally covered for 90 days, while used performance engines and performance transmissions are generally covered for 30 days unless otherwise stated on the sales receipt. Rotary engines and parts are sold as-is with no warranty coverage.

The warranty covers eligible internal engine components, engine block, cylinder walls, and cylinder head against cracks or defects. External parts, electronics, accessories, improper installation, negligence, and installation-related failures are not covered.

Warranty claims require a written description, pictures, videos, and a valid report from a certified mechanic. Returned items must be in the same condition as sold, fully assembled, and include all original parts/components included in the sale.
