USDM to JDM Swap Guide (VQ35DE 6-Speed Manual Transmission)

Installing a JDM CD001 transmission into a USDM 350Z or G35 is straightforward. However, retaining your original USDM external sensors, reverse switch, and clutch release hardware ensures smooth operation without electrical fault codes.

1.Transfer USDM Reverse Switch & Neutral Position Switch: Sensor & Harness Prep.

Inspect the electronic switches on the JDM transmission casing. Unbolt and transfer your original USDM reverse light switch and neutral position switch onto the JDM housing.

How to verify: Plug the USDM vehicle wiring harness connectors onto each switch to confirm a 1:1 match without tension or wire modification.

2. Inspect Clutch Fork, Pivot Ball & Release Bearing: Hydraulic Release Assembly.

Inspect the clutch release fork, pivot ball, and throwout bearing sleeve inside the bellhousing. Replace the clutch pivot ball with a hardened unit and install a new throwout bearing prior to mounting.

How to verify: Press the clutch fork by hand to verify smooth pivoting action along the front bearing retainer guide.

3. Align Input Shaft with Clutch Disk: Flywheel & Clutch Alignment.

Inspect the pilot bushing in the back of the crankshaft. Use a clutch alignment tool to center the clutch friction disc against the pressure plate before bringing the transmission up to the block.

How to verify: Insert the alignment tool into the clutch disc; it should slide smoothly into the pilot bushing without binding.

4. Bolt Transmission to Engine Block: Mechanical Mounting.

Align the transmission bellhousing dowel pins with the VQ35DE block mating face. Slide the transmission flush against the block by hand without drawing it in with bellhousing bolts. Torque all bellhousing bolts to factory specification.

How to verify: Check that the bellhousing and engine block mating faces sit completely flush around the entire perimeter before tightening fasteners.

5. Fill Transmission Fluid & Test Shift Detents: Final Startup.
  1. Reattach transmission crossmember, driveshaft, and shifter assembly linkage inside the cabin.

  2. Fill the transmission with fresh 75W-85 GL-4 gear oil through the fill plug until fluid begins to weep out.

  3. Bleed the clutch hydraulic slave cylinder with fresh brake fluid.

How to verify: Perform a road test to confirm smooth gear engagement through all 6 forward gears and reverse without grinding or lockout.

Safety Warning

Support the transmission securely using a transmission jack during removal and installation. Do NOT start the engine or depress the clutch pedal until fresh GL-4 spec gear oil has been filled to proper operating levels.
