Vehicle Fitment

This JDM N14 turbocharged long block fits the following USDM second-generation Mini Cooper models:

  • 2009–2010 Mini John Cooper Works (JCW) (R55, R56, R57)

USDM to JDM Swap Guide (Mini Cooper N14 Turbo)

Installing a JDM N14 engine into a USDM Mini Cooper requires using the imported engine as a bare long block. Retaining your original USDM vehicle harness, ECU, and specific emissions plumbing guarantees plug-and-play electrical operation without Check Engine Lights (CEL).

Safety Warning

Direct injection fuel systems operate under extremely high pressure (up to 120+ bar). Relieve fuel system pressure safely before unbolting high-pressure fuel lines or rail components.

1.Strip JDM Engine Down to Long Block:Preparation.

Unbolt all external accessories, Japanese wiring harness, ECU connectors, and external brackets from the imported JDM engine. Clean all mounting faces thoroughly.

How to verify: Confirm the engine is stripped to the cylinder head, block, and valve cover assembly before transferring USDM parts.

2.Transfer USDM Engine Harness & Key Electronics:Sensor & Harness Transfer.

Remove your vehicle's original USDM engine wiring harness and sensors. Install them directly onto the JDM engine block:

  • High-Pressure Fuel Pump (HPFP) & fuel rail assembly

  • Camshaft and Crankshaft Position Sensors

  • Vanos Solenoid Valve & MAP/MAF sensors

  • Alternator, Starter, and A/C Compressor

How to verify: Plug in each connector from your USDM wiring harness to verify a 1:1 match without taut or stretched wires.

3.Mount JCW Turbocharger & Cooling Lines:Turbo & Cooling Setup.

Transfer your original USDM intercooler piping, turbo coolant line heat shields, and exhaust downpipe/catalytic converter to match USDM emissions compliance and chassis clearances.

How to verify: Inspect all turbo oil supply/return lines and coolant hoses for tight clamp retention and zero kinks.

4.Install USDM Flywheel / Flexplate & Engine Mounts:Drivetrain Prep.

Unbolt the JDM driveplate/flywheel. Inspect the rear main seal for any sign of oil seepage (replace with a new seal if needed). Transfer your USDM flywheel (6-speed manual) or flexplate (automatic) using fresh threadlocker on the bolts.

How to verify: Torque flywheel/flexplate bolts to factory specifications in a crisscross pattern and rotate the crank 360 degrees by hand.

5.Fluid Fill, Priming & Initial Startup:Final Assembly.
  1. Install the engine into the engine bay and bolt it securely to the transmission and subframe mounts.

  2. Fill with fully synthetic 5W-30 motor oil and fresh BMW/Mini approved coolant.

  3. Prime the oil system by cranking the engine with fuel pump fuse pulled prior to full start.

How to verify: Start the engine, verify oil pressure light extinguishes immediately, bleed the cooling system thoroughly, and scan for active diagnostic fault codes.
