Vehicle Fitment

This JDM engine serves as a replacement long block for the following USDM vehicles equipped with the 2.4L 4-cylinder 2AZ-FE engine:

  • 2002–2009 Toyota Camry (2.4L 4-Cylinder Base, LE, SE, XLE)

USDM to JDM Swap Guide (2AZ-FE Camry)

Installing a JDM 2AZ-FE engine into a USDM Toyota Camry requires using the JDM engine as a bare long block. Because Japanese right-hand drive (RHD) wiring and emissions standards differ from US requirements, transferring key original components from your USDM engine guarantees a direct fit and keeps your dashboard free of Check Engine Lights (CEL).

1. Strip JDM Engine down to Long Block: Preparation.

Unbolt and remove all externally mounted accessories, sensors, manifolds, and wiring harness from the incoming JDM engine. Clean the block surfaces thoroughy.

How to verify: Confirm the JDM engine is stripped down to the block and cylinder head before transferring parts.

2. Transfer USDM Intake & Exhaust Manifolds: Emissions & Intake Setup.

Install your original USDM intake manifold (including throttle body and sensors) and exhaust manifold onto the JDM engine. USDM manifolds contain necessary vacuum, EGR, and oxygen sensor provisions required by your car's engine computer (ECU).

How to verify: Inspect intake and exhaust port gaskets to ensure a flush seal with no gaps or vacuum leak paths.

3. Swap Engine Wiring Harness & Key Sensors: Electrical & Sensors.

Do NOT attempt to use the JDM wiring harness. Unbolt your vehicle's original USDM engine wiring harness and bolt-on sensors, then transfer them directly to the JDM engine:

  • Camshaft and Crankshaft Position Sensors

  • VVT-i Solenoid Valve

  • Coolant Temperature Sensor & Oil Pressure Switch

  • Alternator, Starter, and A/C Compressor

  • Coils, Spark Plugs, Injectors

How to verify: Check that every connector on the USDM harness snaps cleanly into a corresponding sensor without stretching wires.

4. Install Flywheel / Flexplate & Mounts: Drivetrain Prep.

Remove the JDM driveplate. Transfer your USDM flywheel (Manual) or flexplate (Automatic) to the JDM engine, securing the bolts using threadlocking fluid and torquing to factory specification. Swap over your USDM engine mount brackets as well.

How to verify: Turn the crankshaft pulley by hand to ensure smooth 360-degree rotation without interference.

5. Fluids, Burping, and Initial Fire Up:Final Assembly.
  1. Lower the engine into the bay and bolt it to the transmission and motor mounts.

  2. Fill with fresh 5W-30 or 5W-20 engine oil and new Toyota pink/red antifreeze coolant.

  3. Bleed air from the cooling system using a funnel setup.

How to verify: Start the engine, let it reach full operating temperature, verify the cooling fan turns on, and confirm no error codes or oil leaks are present.

Safety Warning

Always disconnect the negative battery cable before performing engine replacement work. Use properly rated engine hoists and stands, and handle all hazardous fluids according to local safety guidelines.
