When swapping a JDM 2AR-FE into a USDM (United States Domestic Market) Toyota RAV4, follow these essential steps to ensure 100% compatibility and no Check Engine Light (CEL):
Sensor Swap: Transfer your original USDM intake manifold, exhaust manifold, and all sensors (MAF, O2, etc.) to the JDM engine block.
EGR & Emissions: If your USDM RAV4 is equipped with specific PZEV/ULEV II smog equipment not present on the JDM long block, you must transfer those components to maintain emissions compliance.
Wiring Harness: Always use your original USDM wiring harness and ECU. The JDM harness is often cut or configured for right-hand drive vehicles and will not plug into your dash.
Coolant & Oil: Use the USDM water pump and thermostat housing if the JDM outlets differ in angle.
Pro Tip: Replace your water pump, thermostat, and spark plugs while the engine is out of the vehicle to save on future labor costs.
