This engine is a direct replacement or popular performance swap for the following models:
Toyota Caldina GT-Four (ST246): 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007
Toyota MR2 (SW20): Popular high-performance swap (Requires wiring and mount adjustment)
Toyota Celica All-Trac/GT-Four: Popular modern upgrade for ST185 and ST205 chassis
Compatibility Note: As a JDM-exclusive engine, North American installations into non-Caldina chassis are considered "custom swaps" and will require an aftermarket ECU or a merged wiring harness to accommodate the Gen 5’s electronic differences.
To ensure a successful installation of the Caldina 5th Gen engine, professional Toyota technicians recommend the following "Integration" steps:
Turbocharger Configuration: The Gen 5 uses a proprietary integrated turbo and exhaust manifold. If you are swapping this into an MR2, ensure you have adequate firewall clearance or utilize a custom downpipe.
Ignition System: Unlike earlier 3S-GTEs, the Gen 5 features Coil-on-Plug (COP). You must use the Caldina ECU or a standalone engine management system (like Link or Haltech) to control the ignition timing correctly.
Wiring Harness: Retain the JDM engine harness for the sensor connectors, but you will likely need a hassis-specific patch harness to interface with your North American MR2 or Celica body plugs.
Oil Pan: Inspect the JDM oil pan. If swapping into an MR2, you may need to swap to an MR2-specific 3S-GTE Oil Pan to ensure correct oil pickup and crossmember clearance.
Intercooler: The Caldina comes with a Top-Mount Intercooler (TMIC). For MR2 swaps, most builders convert to a side-mount or front-mount intercooler (FMIC) setup due to the rear-engine layout.
Fuel System: Ensure your fuel pump is capable of supporting 260+ HP. We recommend a high-flow 255 LPH pump for all turbocharged 3S-GTE swaps.
