To ensure 100% compatibility and long-term durability, professional diesel technicians recommend the following "External Swap" steps:
Cooling System Upgrade: The 2L-TE is sensitive to heat. We strongly recommend installing a new high-flow radiator, a new water pump, and a low-temperature thermostat during installation to prevent cylinder head cracking.
Wiring & ECU: Ensure you use the JDM 2L-TE Engine ECU and wiring harness. If converting from a gas model (like a 22RE or 3VZ-E), significant wiring integration for the glow plug timer and EFI pump will be required.
Transmission & Transfer Case: This package includes the AWD Automatic Transmission. Ensure your driveshaft lengths match the JDM transfer case output flanges, as some USDM 4Runner shafts may require modification.
Fuel System: Inspect and flush your fuel tank. If converting from gasoline, you must replace the fuel pump and lines with diesel-rated components to prevent contamination and pump damage.
Exhaust: The JDM turbo outlet may differ in angle from USDM chassis. Be prepared to fabricate a custom 2.5" or 3" downpipe to maximize turbo spool and reduce EGTs (Exhaust Gas Temperatures).
Glow Plugs: Test the JDM glow plugs before installation. Replacing them with a fresh set of OEM Toyota glow plugs ensures reliable starting in cold climates.
